    ATWATER, Cheryl (1948-2024)<\/summary>\n

    Cheryl Lynn Atwater passed away on October 20, 2024. We will remember her as bright, beautiful, opinionated, and unmovable if she thought there was an injustice. Above all, Cheryl was deeply caring for her family, friends, and students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Born in 1948 to Randolf and Ellen Fraser in Vancouver, Cheryl grew up in Killarney and attended UBC to study education. It was at UBC that Cheryl and Jim’s courtship began, blossoming into 55 years of marriage. After university, Cheryl and Jim started their life together in Mica Creek, then settling in Burnaby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cheryl’s lifelong passion was to provide opportunities for kids to feel safe and supported in expressing their creativity and uniqueness. Cheryl nurtured the minds and spirits of countless students during her 49 years of teaching in Coquitlam – both in regular classrooms and running Challenge Centres. With Terry Peachy and Nancy Hasselhan, Cheryl wrote and published 29 class workbooks to promote and facilitate creativity. In 1984, Cheryl brought Odyssey of the Mind to BC. This program was pivotal in the lives of thousands of kids – Cheryl sustained and was a driving force of the program for 35 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In her final years, Cheryl fell victim to Alzheimer’s, a disease that robbed her of who she was, and its associated complications eventually took her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cheryl is survived by her husband and soulmate Jim, her son Joel (Natasha), her brother Randy (Marilyn), her sister in law Anne, seven nephews and nieces; Darren (Martha), Graeme (Kelly), Sean, James, Jake, Kelly (Kyle) and Megan, as well as innumerable cousins from the large prairie families of her parents. She will be dearly missed by her friends Bev and Joanne, who were always there, and Cheryl’s pseudo god-daughter Stephanie.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    BRUCE, David Leslie (1949-2024)<\/summary>\n

    February 5, 1949 – December 1, 2024<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Dave passed away at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on December 1, 2024. He is survived by his wife Heather; daughters Brione Bruce (Jason Chow) and Colleen Watts (Dan) and grandchildren; sisters Colleen Polowich and Lynn Enderwick (Peter); and his mother, Kay Bruce. He was predeceased by his father, Gilbert Bruce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A third-generation Vancouverite, Dave graduated from John Oliver High School in 1967. He studied Education at UBC, finishing in 1973. That same year, he married Heather and the couple later settled in South Surrey where they raised their daughters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dave’s career as a teacher and counsellor spanned several schools across the Lower Mainland. In retirement, Dave traced the family roots back to William the Conqueror, tended to his gardens, devoured books on history and politics and indulged his four grandchildren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A quiet and compassionate man, Dave will be dearly missed by his family and friends. At Dave’s request, a private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his memory.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    CALDECOTT, Denis Leslie (1920-2007)<\/summary>\n

    July 20, 1920 \u2013 September 18, 2007<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Denis passed away in Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster after a short illness. Born in Caster, Alberta he spent most of his life in the Vancouver and surrounding areas. A veteran of the second world war, followed with 29 years in the Canadian Air Force. During this time he lived with his family in various places throughout Canada and the USA. He was a Social Worker with Veteran\u2019s Affairs before he concluded his working career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He is survived by a loving partner and friend, Edna Carniglia of San Francisco, Edna\u2019s daughter in the true sense of the word, Carol Bassi, four children, Barry, Chilliwack; Anita (Dick), Aldergrove; Sharon, White Rock; Russell (Debra), Comox and 2 step children Marilyn and Bonnie. Two sisters Iris (Cyril), of Richmond, Marjorie of West Vancouver and brother Richard (Lucille) of Minnesota. Nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Services to be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, Thursday, September 27 at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    Gordon was a devoted husband, father and Grandpa. A businessman, writer, and politician. A tireless and level-headed advocate for democracy, equality, and Western Canada. A mariner, a learner, and a handyman. A wise and wonderful person, and a cherished friend to many. Unfailingly respectful and ever curious, he never missed an opportunity to listen and learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gordon is survived by his loving wife Jane Baynham, as well as his children Michelle, Marc, Melissa (Matt Frey), Paige (Chris Straub) and Adrian (Sean Hepple), and step-children Kelsey (Sam) and David. He also leaves behind 12 adoring grandchildren and his sister Louanne Labb\u00e9, along with many other family members and friends. Gordon was predeceased by his dear Kilby in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He will be forever remembered, and deeply missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Service was held Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary\u2019s (Kerrisdale) Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Passed away peacefully on May 27, 2015. Ellen is survived by her loving husband Karl. She will be missed by her son Peter (Colleen), daughter Deirdre, grandchildren Evan, Gregg and Fiona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hope, Freedom, and the Ability to Love.” <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Community member David Scott Grierson passed away on Wednesday July 24th surrounded by the love of his wife, Noreen Maguire, family and friends. Being one who doesn\u2019t give up easily, Dave courageously fought pancreatic cancer for over three and a half years until finally succumbing to the disease. The Crystal Water Beach community was Dave\u2019s happy place. Whether it was \u2018doing the loop\u2019 after dinner, enjoying time with neighbours during happy hour, or tending to \u201chis gardens\u201d in the front and backyards, you\u2019d always find Dave with a story to tell and a smile on his face. The cabin became a special place for both his Canadian and French families to enjoy Christmas time together and lazy summers days. Dave will be dearly missed but his story continues in the memories of his five children and nine grandchildren. <\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    GRIERSON, Janet Louise (1953-2017)<\/summary>\n

    With profound sadness we say goodbye to Janet who passed away peacefully on October 19th after a lengthy fight against cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends throughout her illness and passing. Janet is survived by her loving and devoted husband Ross, son Aaron (Brynn), grandsons Charlie and Leo, sisters Betty (Jim), Donna (Joel), Margot (Bill) and brother Raymond (Dawn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Janet was born in Trail, B.C. where she spent her childhood. She later followed her sister Betty to Vancouver where she worked as a secretary for many years, met her husband and made a wonderful home, family and friends. Love, laughter, thoughtfulness and kindness were at the centre of her world. A gentle mannered nurturing person who made lifelong friends that became part of her extended family. Janet was happiest at home, whether Vancouver or Point Roberts, with her family, cherishing her time with her grandsons in particular.
    Janet was a pillar of strength, dignity and optimism during the course of her life and illness, an example to all who new her journey \u2013 amazing in so many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Until we meet again you will be missed terribly but so fondly remembered in our hearts every minute. As we said to each other every day: I Love You, Drive Safely and see you a little later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The family is so grateful to the doctors and nurses of the BC Cancer Agency and VGH for all their efforts, skills, positive attitude and compassion during her years of treatment. They gave us as much quality time as possible with Janet.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    HENDERSON, James Glen Colquhoun (1923-2016)<\/summary>\n

    August 26, 1923 \u2013 January 29, 2016<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    James Glen Colquhoun Henderson, 92 of Vancouver, B.C. & Point Roberts, WA. passed away on January 29th. He is survived by his wife Shirley Henderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jim was a proud veteran having served in WWII aboard the Snowberry. Jim was the owner of Point Grey Towing tugboat company and Chairman of the Harbour Commission for the North West Fraser River for many years. He built the family cabin in 1954 at Crystal Water Beach, which continues to be shared and enjoyed by all his children. Jim had a passion for his garden and a life long love of Maui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He was predeceased by his first wife Jackie Henderson and survived by his four daughters, Rosemary, Julie, Cathy & Jane as well as 8 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He will be laid to rest at the Point Roberts Cemetery with our Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    HOURSTON, Evelyn (nee Johnstone) (1922-2014)<\/summary>\n

    Passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014 at German Canadian Care Home. Beloved wife of husband Rod Hourston, and loving mother of Roger, Patricia and Gregory Hourston. Survived by her husband, children, and daughter-in-law Malou, granddaughters Kyra and Mackenzie, and siblings Robert and Irene, predeceased by sister Jean and brothers George and Bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on April 23, 1922 and immigrated to Vancouver in 1928. Graduated from John Oliver High School, and was employed in the Head Office of Woodward\u2019s Department Store in Vancouver. Following her marriage in 1947, she gave up her employment to raise her family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Her life included a 2-year stint living in Ottawa, following her husbands\u2019 transfer there by the Department of Fisheries. Happy to return to the west coast, she became an active member of St. Giles United Church (now Oakridge United Church), and much of her social life revolved around the church. Her voluntary work included the delivery of Meals on Wheels for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, and spent many happy summers with her family at their cabin at Crystal Water Beach in Pt. Roberts, Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Celebration of Her Life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6 at: Oakridge United Church, 305 \u2013 41st Avenue West, Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name to the Alzheimer\u2019s Society of Canada would be appreciated.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    HOURSTON, Gregory Alan (1961 – 2026)<\/summary>\n

    With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Gregory Alan Hourston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Greg was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he formed friendships that endured throughout his life. His 32-year career in the airline industry took him and his family on various adventures around the world, allowing them to experience many cultures and places together. Most recently, Greg fulfilled long-held dreams by visiting Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Iceland, places he had long hoped to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Following his retirement from Air Canada\/Aeroplan, Greg devoted his time to volunteering with Vancouver Coastal Health, primarily at Richmond General Hospital, giving back generously to the community he loved. Greg had an extraordinary love for animals and found deep joy in caring for them. He affectionately nurtured Taipan, Mojo, Agnes, Mercy, and Carmilla, and later opened his heart to his senior cat, Lola. His daily visits to feed the ducks at his local pond earned him the affectionate title of their devoted \u201cDuck Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    His summers were always spent in Point Roberts, where Greg\u2019s love of the beach, sun, and sea truly came alive. A devoted beach goer, he enjoyed skim-boarding, sandbars, and lingering until the tide swept away the last sliver of gold. Many of his summer birthday barbecues were joyfully planned and hosted by his wife, Malou, at their summer cabin. Greg also took great pride in building and entering sandcastle competitions with his daughters, Kyra and Mackenzie, returning home year after year with top honours and trophies from the Crystal Water Beach Association. Greg was predeceased by his parents, William \u201cRod\u201d and Evelyn Hourston, and by his brother, Roger. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Malou, his daughters, Kyra and Mackenzie, and sister, Patricia Ciccozzi. Greg will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his generosity, devotion to family, and love of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In Greg\u2019s memory, donations may be made to a charity supporting those affected by alcoholism.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    HOURSTON, Roger William (- 2022)<\/summary>\n

    It is with great sadness to announce the death of our beloved brother Roger William Hourston<\/strong> on 23 December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He will be fondly remembered by many long time residents of Crystal Water Beach as an energetic and generous person, who loved spending his summers at the family cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Roger is pre deceased by his parents, William Rod Hourston and Evelyn Hourston. Survived by his sister Patti and brother Greg, his sister in law Malou and nieces Kyra and Mackenzie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    HOURSTON, William Roderick (1922-2018)<\/summary>\n

    November 26, 1922 \u2013 April 28, 2018<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    It is with saddened hearts that we inform you of the passing of William Roderick Hourston on April 28, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn, brothers \u2013 Archibald, Robert and Alfred. He is survived by his children Roger, Patricia and Gregory, daughter-in-law Malou, and granddaughters Kyra and Mackenzie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Known as Rod, or W.R., he was born in Vancouver on November 26, 1922, the second of four brothers. Graduating from King Edward High School, he entered University of British Columbia in 1941. He left his studies to serve his country as a bomber pilot in WWII. Resuming his education, he graduated with a Masters Degree in Zoology in 1949. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Johnstone on May 2, 1947, and they spent 67 happy years together until her death in 2014. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rod joined the Department of Fisheries as a Biologist in 1949. In 1958 he transferred to Ottawa, spending two years there before returning to the West coast and serving as Director, Pacific Region until his retirement in 1980. He also spent many years on the Board of Governors of the Vancouver Public Aquarium, retiring with the title of Honorary Life Governor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rod\u2019s father built a cabin in Point Roberts in 1924, and he spent many happy years there, before building his own cabin on Crystal Waters Beach in 1964. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of Quilchena Golf Club in Richmond. He was also a ham radio operator, under the handle VE7 FH0. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rod attended St. Giles United Church for many years, doing charity work and driving for meals on wheels. He spent three happy years at Legacy Senior Living before moving to Crofton Manor for his final days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, 12:00 noon at Marpole United Church, 1296 W 67th Avenue, Vancouver. All are welcome. A celebration of his life will follow after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of BC may be made.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

    Noreen and I with our mother\u2019s sister, Shirley,  outside the construction shed that we used while building our first cabin (now belonging to Neil and Martine Menzies).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The shed had a wood burning stove in it that my mom cooked a turkey in. It was all farm land in the distance where the Scott cabin now stands and beyond. It was a ferry ride across the Fraser River for us to get to CWB in those days, before the tunnel was finished. The women would stay July and August with the kids while the men went to work in Vancouver during the week, then showed up on weekends. With water in short supply the children often wore their bathing suits as laundry was done in Ladner at the laundromat when needed. The whole summer was freedom to play and make great friendships just as it is today for our grandchildren. My dad built several cabins in CWB and helped maintain the common space with the other men \u2013 lasting friendships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
