Memorials

In remembrance, we pause to honor the lives of those who have left us. Their legacies, diverse and rich, have shaped the world in ways both large and small. Each name on this list represents a unique story, a life lived, and a profound impact left behind. As we reflect on their contributions, we acknowledge the void their departures have created. May their memories continue to inspire and guide us in the journey ahead.

GRIERSON, Dave (-2024)

“When it comes down to it, life is about three things…
Hope, Freedom, and the Ability to Love.”

Community member David Scott Grierson passed away on Wednesday July 24th surrounded by the love of his wife, Noreen Maguire, family and friends. Being one who doesn’t give up easily, Dave courageously fought pancreatic cancer for over three and a half years until finally succumbing to the disease. The Crystal Water Beach community was Dave’s happy place. Whether it was ‘doing the loop’ after dinner, enjoying time with neighbours during happy hour, or tending to “his gardens” in the front and backyards, you’d always find Dave with a story to tell and a smile on his face. The cabin became a special place for both his Canadian and French families to enjoy Christmas time together and lazy summers days. Dave will be dearly missed but his story continues in the memories of his five children and nine grandchildren.

GRIERSON, Janet Louise (1953-2017)

December 9, 1953 – October 19, 2017

With profound sadness we say goodbye to Janet who passed away peacefully on October 19th after a lengthy fight against cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends throughout her illness and passing. Janet is survived by her loving and devoted husband Ross, son Aaron (Brynn), grandsons Charlie and Leo, sisters Betty (Jim), Donna (Joel), Margot (Bill) and brother Raymond (Dawn).

Janet was born in Trail, B.C. where she spent her childhood. She later followed her sister Betty to Vancouver where she worked as a secretary for many years, met her husband and made a wonderful home, family and friends. Love, laughter, thoughtfulness and kindness were at the centre of her world. A gentle mannered nurturing person who made lifelong friends that became part of her extended family. Janet was happiest at home, whether Vancouver or Point Roberts, with her family, cherishing her time with her grandsons in particular.
Janet was a pillar of strength, dignity and optimism during the course of her life and illness, an example to all who new her journey – amazing in so many ways.

Until we meet again you will be missed terribly but so fondly remembered in our hearts every minute. As we said to each other every day: I Love You, Drive Safely and see you a little later.

The family is so grateful to the doctors and nurses of the BC Cancer Agency and VGH for all their efforts, skills, positive attitude and compassion during her years of treatment. They gave us as much quality time as possible with Janet.

MAGUIRE, George Albert (1922-2015)
MAGUIRE, Leonora (1921-1994)

Our mother “Nora” (Leonora) smiling outside the cabin that Noreen now has.

Noreen and I with our mother’s sister, Shirley,  outside the construction shed that we used while building our first cabin (now belonging to Neil and Martine Menzies).

The shed had a wood burning stove in it that my mom cooked a turkey in. It was all farm land in the distance where the Scott cabin now stands and beyond. It was a ferry ride across the Fraser River for us to get to CWB in those days, before the tunnel was finished. The women would stay July and August with the kids while the men went to work in Vancouver during the week, then showed up on weekends. With water in short supply the children often wore their bathing suits as laundry was done in Ladner at the laundromat when needed. The whole summer was freedom to play and make great friendships just as it is today for our grandchildren. My dad built several cabins in CWB and helped maintain the common space with the other men – lasting friendships.

McINNES, Janet Mae (1925-2021)

June 24 1925 – February 24, 2021
Janet Mae McInnes (Dailly) nee Smith

Mae passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Lynn Valley. Grateful for a loving family, 2 marriages and a large circle of friends. She was born and raised in North Vancouver and is survived by her three children, Ian (Lori), Kathy (Brian), Janet and her grandchildren Brittany, Kaitlyn, Christopher and Deanna.

Mae enjoyed her early work days at BC Tel and Russell & DuMoulin and many memories of hiking, skiing and renting a cabin on Grouse in the ‘40’s. The Sons of Scotland and travels rounded out an active early life on the North Shore.
Horseshoe Bay was a special place for Mae – her grandparents built a cottage and two cabins on Bruce Street in the ‘20’s. Family and friends gathered over the years for picnics, fishing derbies and family events.

Mae loved the sun, the mountains, and being close to the water in a boat or on her paddleboard.

Mae married Tom Dailly in 1950 and they built their first home on 9th street in North Van with father Syd helping with the construction. As the family grew, the house was expanded, and later the family moved to Lynn Valley in the ‘60’s. Tom predeceased Mae in 1978.

In chapter 2 – Mae married Dermott McInnes in 1979. The extended family now included David (Sue), Don (Dee) and grandchildren Neil (Donn), Ian, Colin and Fiona – followed by great grandchildren Wil, Elliot and Duncan.

Favorite times included: life at the cabin in Crystal Water Point Roberts, early spring visits to Maui, travels with Dermott to Scotland, Ireland, England, Egypt, Europe, Israel, Australia, and hiking the Routeburn in New Zealand, rounded out some of their adventures.

Her involvement with Lynn Valley and Mount Seymour United Churches was an important part of her life and forged lifelong bonds and friendships. For 71 years, she was a member of the Burrard Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Being an active part of her family’s life, checking in with friends, working in the Thrift Shop at Mount Seymour United, writing her stories of growing up in North Vancouver and the family history in Horseshoe Bay, kept her happy in later years.

Thank you to the staff of Sunrise for making Mae part of their family the past 4 years.

We would also like to thank Rev. Nancy Talbot of Mount Seymour United for her involvement in our family journey.

If you wish to remember Mae, donations can be made to First United Church

MENZIES, Cecile Nanette (nee Broster) (1922-2007)
MENZIES, Morris Albert (1921-2010)
MILROY, Barbara Ann (1929-2024)

May 21, 1929 – September 9, 2024

Warm, kind and curious, deeply loyal. These are words that describe Barbara Ann Milroy, who died on September 9 at the age of 95.

No one could rock a pair of capri pants like Barbara Ann, or dance to Fred Astaire with her sense of glamour and timing, or laugh with her friends with such delight – these women who she held so close throughout her life. No one could whip up a Pavlova on the turn of a dime like her, or corral the troops in the annual frenzy of blackberry jam making at Point Roberts. Her Christmas dinners were the stuff of legend – carolling and forty-foot-long tables gleaming with candlelight, scarlet tablecloths and polished silver, the babies, the grannies and the strays all piled in together. Perhaps Barbara Ann was thinking of Peter 4:8-9: “…above all things have fervent charity among yourselves.” Or maybe it just came to her naturally. She made the magic happen.

Barbara Ann leaves a legacy to all who knew her. Catch each moment and relish it. Never pass up a chance encounter with a resplendent azalea, or the opportunity for a visit – even if it’s on the fly. Barbara Ann was a big believer in the brisk walk – those who accompanied her would find themselves in a lather of sweat alongside her ladylike glow. What better way to celebrate all things bright and beautiful than to step out into the glory of a sunny Vancouver morning? She was tiny but compounded of a kind of tensile vitality and joy that stayed with her long into her later years, and which her family carries forward now that she is gone.

MILROY, Elizabeth Ann Hart (1957-2023)

1957 to May 3, 2023

On May 3, Elizabeth Hart, aged 65, died unexpectedly due to the unlikely complications of surgery. The improbability of this blunt fact is not lost on her family, many friends, students, and colleagues who have long marveled at her energy and vigor.

A lover of life in the extreme – the adoring matriarch of her own family, perpetual fluffer of the pillows of friendship, delighter in the beauty of the natural world – she lived more in her lifetime than many of us could hope to in several. To sit with her on a chairlift at Whistler, or in front of the fire at Point Roberts, was to be in the very best of company – reveling in the radiance of the day, telling tales of work and home, bonding over stories of her beloved children, Wilson, Foster, Sally and Thomas; the latter two with their respective spouses, Jordan Ardanaz and Rianna Wise; whose newborn, Francesca, was the light of Lize’s last months on this earth.

Giving was what she was good at, putting generosity into daily professional practice in her role as Montessori teacher at Maple Grove Elementary – having spent 1996 to 2014 teaching at Boundary Bay Montessori House. Stories of the classroom sometimes made their way home, names withheld, and her respect for her colleagues, particularly those she was mentoring, was obvious to all who knew her. Her compassion always lead her to single out the child, or the families, who needed her most. Sometimes she would tell those stories too.

When the subject of conversation was serious, Lize fully engaged, but she was never far from a sense of divine silliness, infectious spontaneity, or of communion in life’s pleasures. No one could better enjoy a slice of fresh bread with homemade Apricot jam (that was the Milroy in her) or a plunge into the ice-cold ocean of Crystal Water Beach on a hot summer’s day. She loved the simple things best. Blossoms against the spectacle of mountains and snowfields, an afternoon of work in the garden at Point Roberts, a nap with her most unlikely dog-friend Fred, anything with hearts on it, a freshly groomed ski run awaiting her fresh tracks, or the folds of fat on a baby’s wrists – a sight that would send her into rapture.

Moving through her days, Lize was exultant. She was a remarkably strong person – in her teenage athletic endeavors in track, in her perseverance as she faced life’s curve balls, but also in her certainty about how to care for the people around her. If she was firm, it was because she was unfailingly practical, her thoughts centered on maximizing care. This was a woman born to be in charge.

Lize’s primary devotion was to her own family, and to her husband of 43 years, Andrew Hart, who she invariably referred to as her rock, her partner in all her undertakings. Like her parents, Barbara Ann Milroy and the late John Alexander Milroy, she saw family as an arena of trusted, unconditional support but also as a collective primed to serve. Her family will surely carry that warm mission forward as they honour her memory in the years ahead.

Along with her husband, children, and grandchildren, she is survived by her brothers and sisters, Allison, Thomas (Sarah), Stephen and Sarah Jane Milroy; and by her nieces and nephews, Gabriela, Roberto, Victoria, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Nellie, Sutherland, Anna, Henry, Tara, Sarah, and Julia. A Celebration of Life was held at St. Mary’s Kerrisdale, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, on May 25, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.

MILROY, John Alexander (1927-2021)

August 17, 1927 to January 24, 2021

One of the world’s most gracious souls left our world on January 24, 2021. John Alexander Milroy died peacefully at home, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 68 years, Barbara Ann. He was often heard to say that marrying her had been his greatest accomplishment. Following their marriage, in April of 1952, they made a family, and Barbara Ann and their children – Allison Jane, Tom (Sarah), Elizabeth Ann (Andrew), Stephenson and Sarah Jane — mourn his passing, remembering with fondness his kind and comic ways.

John loved his family fiercely, and was devoted to his grandchildren Wilson, Foster, Elizabeth, Gabriela, Roberto, Sally, Jonathan, Victoria, Thomas, Nellie, Sutherland, Anna and Henry, as well as his great grandchildren Sam, Angus and James. He was grateful for all the blessings of life, beginning with the companionship of his beloved Barbie, swashbuckling games of pickleball on the family court, the raucous company of his children and grandchildren at the dinner table, the sight of freshly mown lawns at the Point Roberts cabin, the memory of a long-ago ice hockey game played under clear blue Manitoba skies at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School, or the sweet sound of his driver smacking the ball down the 18th fairway at Point Grey Golf course on a breezy summer day. Music was another love of his life, and he could be seen dancing or conducting as the rhythms swept over him. His cowboy lullabies, played on the harmonica to his children at bedtime, marked the end of many happy days.

John’s business life provided another source of comradery over the years, as he held various positions at Spear & Jackson, BC Development Corporation, Macdonald Detwiller and Associates Ltd., and the Credit Union Deposit Insurance Corporation. John also served on the board of Interfor Corporation, taking pleasure in the application of his financial acumen and seasoned judgement.

Finally, he and Barbara Ann were devoted members of the St Mary’s Kerrisdale Church community, and John was awarded the Anglican Order of The Diocese of New Westminster for his service to his faith. His generosity to others was at the heart of his life, as was his effort to look out for the needs of those around them. His kindness and wry humor will be missed by all, and the pleasure he took in the company of others, particularly young people. Always more interested in the accomplishments of others than his own, John was a gentleman of another time, with a grace and kindness too rare in today’s world.

RAMSAY, Jim (-2023)

It is with heartfelt sadness, Judy Ramsay and family wish to share the passing of Jim last Tuesday evening (May 30, 2023). There are few in our Crystal Water Beach Community who, over the years,  have been in the company of Jim Ramsay and not come away feeling spirited by his friendship. Whether a chat on the side of the road, a helping hand fixing something around your cabin, or managing community projects; his love for his family, and neighbours new and old was always present.  We grieve with Judy, Chris, Carli and their families who were Jim’s world.

RANTA, James Lawrence (1943-2024)

After continually beating the odds over again, James Lawerence Ranta passed peacefully on January 16, 2024.

Predeceased by his parents, Lawerence and Pauline Ranta, and his cherished younger brother, Robert. Missed by his wife, Penny; children Krista (Luke) and Brock (Ashley); and beloved grandchildren Connor, Evalina, Weston, and Lachlan. He is also survived by Stark, Rachel, Asher and Wyatt; his sisters Patsy (Keith) and Susan; and brother John (Carmen). His amazing dinner banter will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.

James was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. Number 1 in the Ranta family sound off, he fondly remembered his childhood being split between roaming the streets of Point Grey and stealing cars in the farm fields of Crystal Water Beach, Point Roberts. Never far from the water, James loved sailing and reminisced about his summers spent operating fishing boats in Bella Coola.

James graduated from UBC with a double Masters in Agriculture and Business, setting him up for a career overseeing Agricultural loans with the Royal Bank. He would always say he felt so lucky to have combined his greatest passions and never felt that he worked a day in his life. When not pouring over the stock market in his free time, he loved volunteering in the community with the DPD, and purchased a large fleet of old police cars to “tinker” on. His weekends were spent in the garage taking apart and putting back together these prized possessions. In the early 2000s James and Penny purchased a vacation home in Vernon, which quickly became his favourite place to be. James spent the rest of his summers perched in his chair, watching the sailboat races down Lake Okanagan. He was pretty sure this was heaven.

As James would tell you, one day in February of 2003, a young man would enter his world and, at 5 minutes old, raised his little hand and waved him over. Legend has it the two had a conversation in which it was decided that they would remain the best of friends for the rest of time. In this moment, James Lawerence Ranta took on his proudest title of Grandpa Jim. As big Grandpa Jim he was always on the phone problem solving with his grandchildren when parents dared say no, or needs were misconstrued as wishes. He attended every practice, watched over every recess, and cheered loudly from every sideline. He would often remark that this was the happiest time of his life. And while our world has lost our number one fan, we know he will still be cheering loudly from beyond, surrounded by a number of cats that have been patiently waiting at the rainbow bridge for his arrival.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Northcrest care home for providing dad with the best care over the last year. At James’ request a celebration of life will take place in Vernon this summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local SPCA.

SCOTT, Gwendolynn “Gwen” (1921-2017)

Gwen passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Vancouver where she resided for the last 6 yrs. Born in London, England, her family moved to Vancouver in 1929.
